FEB 28,1990 20t Per Copy Weather Monday: high 40, low 20, hum. 58%. Winter has finally arrived The days are beautiful, but the air has a nip in it early in the morning. Madison County Sheriff J. Dedrick Brown won’t stand trial for giving away confiscated moonshine, a county grand jury decided Monday. Sheriff Brown had stated that it was a long standing custom for sheriffs to give_ away moonshine for medicinal purposes. The Supreme Court has upheld a longstanding ban against homosexuals serving in the armed forces. Jesse J. Jackson announced Monday he will not run for mayor of Washington but he refused to rule out a third bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992. The Columbus Town Council will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m at the Columbus Town Hall. Thursday at 8 p.m. is the opening night for “On Golden Pond" at the Fine Arts Center. Other performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p m. Dept, of Agriculture, Forest Service Division, will be the speaker. Helen W. F. Liechty Mrs. Helen W F. Liechty formerly of Red Bird Lane in Tryon, died on Saturday. February 24. at Manor Care Nursing Center, Boynton Beach. Florida. She was 80 years old Mrs. Liechty and her husband, the late Howard Liechty. moved to Tryon in 1980, and they were actively involved in many areas of this community's life. An active church woman, she served as President of Church Women United, and was also Senior Deacon at the local Congregational Church. She is survived by two sons. Robert L. Foot of Boynton Beach and Theodore W. Foot, of Niskayuna. N.Y.. and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Boynton Beach on Saturday. March 3, at 2 p.m. Local memorial gifts may be made to the Tryon Congregational Church.
